Altavista on Track, a 501-c3 organization, was formed in 2007 when Altavista was designated as a Virginia Main Street Community by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
Per Virginia Main Street Program Guidelines, a Virginia Main Street community is a historic preservation-based economic and community development program that follows the National Main Street Center’s Main Street Approach. Essentially, we use existing historical property to grow the commercial district.
Altavista On Track follows the National Main Street Center's Four-Point Approach to maintain designation. This includes maintaining a board of directors, and four sub-committees, organization, design, economic vitality, and promotions.
Organization committee is responsible for volunteer recruitment, board population, fundraising, and overseeing volunteer activities.
Design committee involves improving the physical appearance of downtown by renovations, improving signage, and creating an attractive, usable, pedestrian-friendly environment.
Economic vitality committee has the job of identifying new commercial opportunities for the district, finding useful options for historic property and identifying ways of assisting current property owners and/or tenants.
Promotions committee promotes the downtown district, marketing the assets to resident, visitors, and potential business owners through special events, retail promotion and other activities.
